In making the switch to green beauty, some products are particularly hard to replace. In this series of posts I will  highlight the treasures discovered during my search for products that work as well, if not better, as their conventional counterparts.

If you have ever read a beauty or makeup blog, you probably have heard of Bioderma’s micellar water. A cult product touted by every makeup artist, model and person who has set foot in a French pharmacy, it’s a gentle and effective makeup remover and cleanser. It’s also great for the conscientiously lazy: you know, us folks who know that it is crucially important to wash our faces before bed, but who can’t quite muster up the energy after a long day. A micellar water makes it easy: just a quick swipe and your face is cleaned, toned and refreshed. As conventional ingredients go, those in Bioderma aren’t actually too bad, they’re just… not that great. After making the switch to green skincare, every time I used Biderma I would feel the need for a second cleanse, simply because I didn’t want these not-great ingredients coating my skin while I slept.

Enter Absolution L’Eau Soir et Matin. Trust the French to create an all-natural, mostly organic alternative to the cult Bioderma. I have long been a fan of Absolution Skincare. Their products are beautifully formulated and perfectly packaged to be both convenient and to help retain freshness and effectiveness of the products and their L’Eeau micellar water is a perfect example of that ethos. It is a perfect makeup remover, at least for removing green makeup: I haven’t tried it to remove conventional waterproof mascara or long-lasting lip stain, but I suspect it would acquit itself admirably even with those products. Yet, the best part is the ingredients it uses to accomplish this task. Helicrysum, potassium and hazelnut oil work in synergy to cleanse, tone and nourish the skin. Although I tend to use it as a first part of a double cleanse, this is mostly because I am a cleansing obsessive. It would work perfectly fine on its own and leave your skin soft, clean and glowing. The awesomely fun pump dispenser and elegant bottle are just bonuses (though the dispenser does help maintain freshness), but there is much to be said for a product that looks as good on the bathroom counter as it feels on the skin. All in all, L’Eau Soir et Matin is exactly the sort of product that makes going green a joy, rather than a chore.
