If you follow a lot of green beauty bloggers, you know that many of them have posted their holiday gift guides. After all, most people like to finish their gift shopping early – the presents purchased, wrapped lovingly and placed under the tree with care soon after the Thanksgiving turkey has been made into the first of many sandwiches. This guide is not for them. No, this is for all of you rushing around like coked out squirrels at 5 pm on December 23rd and sending desperate “do you think Jennifer would like a scarf” texts to your exasperated family members. This is for you, the brave souls who spend more on shipping than they do on gifts, because everything has to be delivered overnight. This is for the procrastinators, the overspenders, the bad children and the the flighty aunts. You are my people. I feel your pain and I am here to help. I will mostly keep to a single product per category so you have some money left for those shipping fees. As for those of you smug overachievers, you might just find some stocking stuffer ideas on this list.
Cleanser is probably the one can’t-do-without product for any beauty arsenal. As it happens, I am a bit of a cleanser obsessive and have tried, tested and (mostly) loved virtually every type of green cleanser available. In this series of posts I will discuss the advantages and drawbacks of different cleanser types and will highlight some of my favorites. In the penultimate entry of the series (I know! It’s almost the end of an era!) we will chat about the hardworking scrub cleansers.
I often get rather amazing, thoughtful and fairly deep-diving comments on my posts. I figure that my other readers might be interested in reading my answers (and I need to be my ridiculously verbose self), so I am starting a new feature: Ask HH. Ask your brilliant questions in comments and will do a regular digest with my answers. Of course, please keep in mind that I am not a dermatologist or an aesthetician, so my advice comes strictly from personal experience and obsessive research.
This is the time of the year when gift guides pop up all over the place. This week, HH is jumping on the bandwagon with present ideas for all the colorful characters in your life. Up first: the best gifts for a Bombshell.
Ahh, the Bombshell! The tides of fashion may change from grunge to minimalism to punk, but the Bombshell is eternal: her heels ever precarious, her lipstick bold, her curves dangerous. The Bombshell kind of femininity may seem like a throwback, but what could be more modern than loving one’s curves and being unafraid of one’s power and sexuality? As far as I am concerned, all of us can use a little Bombshell flair in our lives every once in a while and these gifts can bring out the inner Marilyn in even the shyest of tomboys.
Well, folks, it’s safe to say that winter is here! Most of us have been sighing over the weather forecast, pulling out our thickest sweaters and watching with dismay as the first flurries float down from the skies. The changing weather brings changes to the skin and just as you are switching from floaty tops and motorcycle jackets to cable-knit sweaters and puffer coats, so should you winterize your skincare. Cold winter air and dry indoor heat can be murder even on the hardiest of skin types. Thankfully, we can always call upon a face balm to act as both a cozy cashmere sweater to cosset the skin and as a warm winter coat to shield it from the elements. Balms are particular green beauty favorites because they are waterless: the absence of water means a longer shelf life without a need for preservatives. Packed full of nourishing butters and oils, balms deliver a skin-softening punch and, perhaps most importantly in moisture-sapping conditions, act as an occlusive to prevent moisture loss from the skin without clogging pores. Here are four of my favorite balms that I will be using throughout the colder months to keep my skin happy, soft and moisturized.
Being a green beauty doesn’t just mean using facial oils and avoiding parabens. Us clean girls believe that beauty comes from the inside out, that the best glow comes from eating your vegetables and that yoga and Pilates beat blush and mascara for getting rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes. Still, we are not saints (or, at least, I certainly am not). There are those evenings with best friends and margaritas, the Dutch courage for karaoke nights, the oysters and absinthe at Maison Premiere and maybe (*gasp!*) even the occasional cigarette. These are the things that can make life exciting, but boy! they are murder on the skin. Still, your happy indiscretions needn’t leave a mark. Here is your green beauty prescription for having glowing skin, even with a pounding head.
If James Bond teaches us anything (what? You don’t get all your important life lessons from Bond movies?!), it’s that being covered in gold is a surefire way to a tragic demise. Yet, as any girl knows, nothing lengthens limbs, enhances muscles and gives that sexy summery glow like a bit of strategically-placed golden shimmer.
